'Enforce anti-tobacco law strictly'
Speakers at a view exchange meeting yesterday urged the government to enforce the anti-tobacco law strictly to discourage smoking effectively.
They also called for imposing high taxes on tobacco products and increasing the penalty for smoking in public places and transport.
Work for a Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust and Manobik jointly organised the meeting at the National Press Club in the city.
The speakers suggested setting up smoking zones so that people can smoke there without disturbing non-smokers.
They also urged the government to set up an anti-smoking cell for strong surveillance.
They called on the media to highlight anti-tobacco campaign in order to raise awareness among the people.
Deputy Secretary Dr Sahadat Hossain moderated the programme attended by officials from ministries concerned and representatives of NGOs.
