Faraizi Movement was non-communal
Speakers at a discussion yesterday said Faraizi Movement spearheaded by Haji Shariatullah in the then Bengal was a movement against the landlords patronised by British rulers for the emancipation of the subjugated farmers and common people.
It was not a communal movement against any religious community; rather it was an attempt to free common people and farmers from oppression, injustice, and the atrocity of landlords, they said.
The speakers said the movement showed the light of hope to establish the democratic rights of the exploited people in Bengal, which was actually the pre-stage of the liberation of Bangladesh.
Titled "Faraizi Movement: Perspective and Achievement", the discussion was organised by Bangladesh Sangskriti Kendra in Poet Sufia Kamal auditorium of National Museum in the city yesterday.
The speakers also demanded inclusion of the story of Faraizi Movement in the national history properly to inspire the young generation about the freewill and revolutionary awareness of the people of Bengal against all oppressive rulers.
Haji Shariatullah was born to an ordinary farmer in Faridpur in 1781. He awakened the Muslims of Bengal and started the movement among the most depressed section of the Muslim society, the farmers and the artisans.
Columnist Dr Mahbub Ullah, Dr Nurul Islam Monjur of Jahangirnagar University, Dr Mahfuj Parvez of Chittagong University, Dr Muhammad Ahsan Ullah Foisal, DKM Mohsin, and Dr Moin Uddin Ahmed Khan, among others, took part in the discussion.
