6 to die, 8 others get life
A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced six people to death and eight others to life in jail for killing Awami League leader Mohammad Shahidul Alam Khan, in Kishoreganj district in April, 2006.
The convicts with death are Mohammad Moazzem Hossain alias Rubel, Kabir Rabbani alias Jewel, Mohammad Novel, Mohammad Babul Miah, Mohammad Mamun and Abdur Rahim Khan.
The lifers are Sabuj Miah, Dulal Miah, Akbar Hossain, Awal Khan, Aungur Miah, Ahad Khan, Babu Khan and Shamsul Alam Sarkar.
Of the convicts, Rubel, Jewel and Novel have been absconding. The punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender, the judge said.
Judge Mohammad Motahar Hossain of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 of Dhaka pronounced the judgment in presence of 11 accused at a packed courtroom.
A group of miscreants led by Aungur killed the victim at about 11:30am on April 7 in 2006 at Sadullahpur in Kishoreganj following a feud over establishing supremacy in the locality.
A murder case was filed with Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station against Moazzem and 16 others in this connection.
The tribunal recorded statements of 15 prosecution witnesses during the trial.
