Why magnifying a few failures?
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said the lawmakers from her alliance should not only highlight what she thought only a few failures of her government.
“If you seriously look for, you will find successes in every ministry,” Hasina said in parliament replying to queries from MPs.
She said, “There may be one or two failures. But there is logic behind arming the enemies with weapons by highlighting only those failures rather than talking about the achievements.”
She said some people are overplaying the government's few failures instead of praising it for its many successes. “Why do we see such meanness?” she asked.
Speaking about Thursday's outburst in parliament against the ministries of communications, power and energy, and commerce, the premier said she heard only about failures. She was disappointed to find only criticisms against the government while going through the proceedings that day, she added.
On Thursday, some MPs from the Awami League-led alliance launched a blistering attack on the communications minister for battered roads and highways.
In doing so, they also criticised the performance of the commerce minister for price hike of essentials and the state minister for power for shortage of electricity.
Hasina also briefly described the situation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's government faced immediately after the country's independence in 1971.
“The father of the nation was not given much time to rebuild a war-ravaged country. Within three years of his government, massive propaganda was launched countrywide against it to mislead people and poison their mind against the government,” Hasina said.
She continued, “The August 15, 1975 carnage was plotted after failure to damage the popularity of Bangabandhu through propaganda.”
But yesterday's scene in parliament was different. Jatiya Party MP Mujib ul Haque, who joined Thursday's verbal attack, yesterday lauded the present government for its success in education sector.
Several other alliance lawmakers, who took the floor to raise supplementary questions for Hasina, highly lauded the government's success in different sectors.
During the question hour, the premier also described the steps her government has taken for the betterment of autistic children.
