Porimol found guilty
Porimol Joydhor, the sacked teacher of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, is guilty of raping a class-X girl of the school's Bashundhara branch, police and government investigations have found.
But although the education ministry's committee held school principal Husne Ara Begum and the now-dissolved managing committee responsible for negligence in solving the crisis, the police charge sheet recommended relieving them, citing the charges against them were not proven.
The five-member government committee headed by SM Waheduzzaman, controller of examinations of the Dhaka Education Board, submitted the 24-page probe report to Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday.
The committee talked to 18 people including the victim's family, students, teachers and guardians to prepare the report.
"It is clearly proven that Porimol committed the crime," the education minister told reporters after receiving the report. "We want harsh punishment to the culprit."
Husne Ara delayed action against the offender, which complicated the situation, the minister said citing the report. The managing committee did not take steps to tackle the situation, making room for some people to create instability in the school, he added.
However, Inspector of Badda Police Station SM Shahadat Hossain told The Daily Star, "Porimol was found guilty after analysing the medical report of the victim and witness accounts. But the allegations against the principal and the branch-in-charge were not proven."
Police submitted the charge sheet last week.
The victim's family, however, rejected the charge sheet, saying they will file a no confidence application against it before a court.
The school plunged into a deep trouble after the victim accused Porimol of violating her at his coaching centre in Badda twice, first on May 28 and then on June 17. The school authorities fired Porimol on July 5 amid widespread criticism and demand from the students and other quarters.
On the same day, the victim's family filed a case against him. In the complaint, her father accused Lutfur Rahman, in-charge of the school's Bashundhara branch, and Husne Ara of trying to cover up the incident and delaying action against the culprit.
Porimol was arrested on July 6. Later on July 11, he confessed before a court to raping his student. The news sparked anger among students and guardians who demonstrated before the school till July 14.
