HC summons docs, officials of 2 hospitals
The High Court yesterday asked Dhaka's Labaid Cardiac Hospital to explain allegation of negligence that caused the death of Dhaka University teacher Dr Mridul Kanti Chakrobarty who was admitted there with diarrhea related dehydration.
The court also called for a similar explanation from Ibn Sina Hospital Limited where three newborn babies recently died amid allegations of negligence by doctors.
The chairman and members of trustee board of Ibn Sina Hospital Limited and its two doctors Saida Sultana and Anwarul Abedin, and the chairman of Labaid Cardiac Hospital, and its director Dr AKM Mahbubul Haque and chief consultant have been asked to appear before the HC on August 23.
An HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore also directed Ibn Sina Hospital to produce all the documents, papers and machine readable bills related to the babies on August 23.
The bench issued the summon against the officials and doctors of Ibn Sina Hospital Limited following a August 15 report by private television channel Boishakhi that the three newborn babies died due to negligence of the hospital authorities.
The report said the authorities held the bodies of the three newborn babies for three days denying the parent access to them.
The court also issued a rule upon the hospital officials to explain within 12 days why they should not be punished for their reported negligence in saving the children.
The same bench summoned three officials of Labaid Cardiac Hospital to explain the treatment they provided to Dr Mridul Kanti Chakrobarty who died in the hospital on August 15.
Following a writ petition, the court also issued a rule upon them to explain in two weeks why the doctors, who attended Dr Mridul in the hospital, should not be punished for their reported negligence in his treatment.
The order followed a writ petition filed by Advocate Manzill Murshid on behalf of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.
Dr Mridul, a professor at the Music department of Dhaka University, was rushed to the hospital with dehydration. He died without any proper treatment, the petition said.
