Road accidents kill 11, injure 165
At least 11 people were killed and 165 others injured in separate road accidents in Gopalganj, Barguna, Brahmanbaria, Thakurgaon and Chapainawabganj yesterday and on Monday night.
A correspondent from Gopalganj reports: Four people, including a police inspector, were killed and 30 others seriously injured in a road accident in Gopalganj yesterday.
The deceased were identified as ABM Golam Kibria, 45, an inspector of detective branch of Patuakhali Sadar, Sanjida Parveen, 40, a housewife of village Kustiadangi under Rajbari district and two other unidentified women. Kibria was the son of late Wahab Sarder of village Deobhog under Faridpur upazila in Pabna district.
The accident occurred on the Dhaka-Barisal highway near at Domrakandi brige under Muksudpur upazila when a Barisal-bound passenger bus from Dhaka turned upside down and fell into a roadside ditch near the Domrakandi Bridge as its driver lost his control over the steering.
Three of the passengers died on the spot while an unidentified female passenger succumbed to her injuries on the way to hospital. At least 30 other passengers were also injured in the accident were admitted to Rajoir upazila health complex and different clinics.
Meanwhile, five people were seriously injured when a local bus and human hauler called Nasiman collided on head-on on Gopalganj-Tungipara road at noon. Two of them were rushed to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital in critical condition.
Of them, Nasiruddin, 50, of village Jhanjhania were shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Our correspondent from Patuakhali adds: At least three people were killed and 70 others injured in a road accident on Patuakhali-Kuakata Road at Amtali upazila in Barguna yesterday.
The dead were identified as bus driver Shahid, 30, and two-year-old child Surma and an unidentified woman aged about 40.
The accident occurred at about 9:30am when a Kuakata-bound passenger bus from Patuakhali collided head-on with a Patuakhali-bound bus from Kuakata in the Bandra area under Amtali upazila, leaving three dead died on the spot, locals said.
Of the injured, 15 were rushed to Amtali upazila health complex, 25 to Kalapara health complex and 12 to Patuakhali General Hospital.
Our correspondent from Brahmanbaria says: Two people were killed and 25 others injured in road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway at Gugad village under Sarail upazila yesterday.
The dead were identified as Achia Begum, 50, and Md Shahidur Rahman, 32, of Sunamganj.
Witnesses, police and hospital sources said the accident occurred when a speeding Dhaka-bound bus from Sylhet hit a standing truck form behind on the highway at Gugad (Islamabad) village early hours of yesterday, leaving 27 passengers of the bus injured.
Of them, Achia and Shahidur succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital.
Sixteen were rushed to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital in critical condition while others were released after first aid and two others were admitted to a private clinic.
The seriously injured are Sadhin, 30, Mainul, 30, Abdul Karim, 45, Azharul Islam, 35, Ruhul Amin, 28, Momin Mia, 35, Nasir Mia, 18, Jamal Mia, 30, Ripan Mia, 23, Ayub Mia, 30, Rafique Mia, 27, Afruj Mia, 32, Arif Mia, 27, Chadir Mia, 27, Habib Mia, 24, and Md Uzzal Mia, 19.
The driver and the helper of the bus have managed to escape.
A correspondent from Thakurgaon adds: One person was killed and 40 others were injured in separate road accidents at Beakhara and Munshirhat under Sadar upazila in Thakurgaon yesterday.
The dead was identified as Mahabubur Rahman Liton, 50, of Ashanagarh village under Sadar upazila.
Police and witnesses said the accident occurred on Thakurgaon-Dinajpur highway in front of Polli Biddyut office at about 9:00am when a Dhaka-bound bus hit a bicycle from behind, leaving bicycle rider Liton dead on the spot.
Police sent the dead body to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police said another accident occurred at about 8:00am when a Panchagarh-bound bus collided head-on with a minibus at Munshirhat under Sadar upazila on Thakurgaon-Panchagarh highway, leaving 40 people injured.
Of the injured, 17 were admitted to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital and 12 others to Boda Upazila Health Complex in Panchagarh. Rest of them were given first aid. Minibus driver Abdus Samad, 30, was sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Our correspondent from Chapainawabganj adds: A motorcyclist was killed in a road accident at Atahir in Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila on Monday night.
The victim was identified as Kamrul Islam, 35, son of Daud Ali of Namoshankarbati in Chapainawabganj municipality.
Police said the accident occurred when a Nachole-bound truck collided head-on with a motorcycle at Atahir village at around 9:00pm when he was returning home.
Locals rushed him to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital where Kamrul succumbed to his injuries.
