Language movement hero Azmee passes away
Maulana Ahmedur Rahman Azmee, a language movement hero of 1952 and a freedom fighter, passed away around 9:30pm on Thursday. He was 82.
He left behind his wife, three sons and two daughters. Maulana Azmee was born in Daikhali of Ichakhali union of Mirsarai in Chittagong.
In 1952 as a student of Hathazari Alia Madrasa he was involved in the Language Movement. He had organised a meeting in protest of firing in the rally on February 21.
He was the general secretary of the Chittagong district unit of East Pakistan Students Union. He was also office secretary of Chittagong district unit Awami League and the convener of the election management committee of United Front in 1954.
He was declared fugitive in 1958 during the martial law period. General Ayub Khan declared prize for arresting him. He was arrested and later freed during the 11-point movement.
Azmee was also general secretary of Chittagong district unit of National Awami Party (NAP). After liberation he was elected organising secretary of NAP. Later, he was elected presidium member of Ganoforum.
President of Ganoforum Dr Kamal Hossain and general secretary of the party Adv Subrata Chowdhury in a joint statement expressed deep shock at the death of Azmee.
Sammilito Sangskritik Jote, Bangaldesh Khetmajur Samity, Communist Party of Bangladesh and Bangladesh Krisok Samity also condoled his death.
