Move to fight human trafficking
US Ambassador-at-Large Luis CdeBaca, from the US State Department's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, arrived in Dhaka yesterday for a two-day visit.
His visit is a part of efforts between the government of Bangladesh and the US to fight human trafficking and facilitate safe labour migration.
During his visit, according to an official announcement of US embassy, he will meet government officials, civil society organisations and representatives of Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA).
Appointed by President Obama in May 2009, CdeBaca formerly served in the US Justice Department.
He was one of the country's most-decorated federal prosecutors in the Justice Department, leading investigations and prosecutions of cases involving money laundering, organised crime, alien smuggling, official misconduct, hate crimes, and human trafficking.
He was awarded Attorney General's Distinguished Service Award for leading trial counsel in the then largest slavery prosecution in US history, involving enslavement of over 300 Vietnamese and Chinese workers at a garment factory in American Samoa.
