An eight-day theatre festival, titled, 'Mayor Natya Utshab', began in Barisal on December 20.
The festival has been arranged jointly by Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation's (BGTF) Barisal division unit and Barisal City Corporation (BCC).
BCC Mayor Shawkat Hossain Hiron inaugurated the festival and led a rally on the opening day.
Among others, Ramendu Majumdar, president of International Theatre Institute Worldwide; Liaquat Ali Lucky, chairman of BGTF; Jhuna Chowdhury, secretary general of BGTF and others attended the festival.
Fourteen theatre groups from Dhaka, Barisal and Jhalakathi will stage 15 plays at Barisal Ashwini Kumar Hall and Shabdaboli Studio Theatre from December 20 to 27, said Syed Dulal, convener of the festival organising committee.
“Baan Eshechhey Mora Gangey, Khultey Hobey Nao” is the theme and slogan of the festival, calling for the emergence of a new stream of local culture, according to the organisers.
Theatre Art Unit, Drama Department of Dhaka University, Drishtipat, Natya Kendra, Pranganey Mor, Aranyak, Shabdaboli Group Theatre, Kheyali Group Theatre, Barisal Natak, Brojomohan Theatre, Barisal Shishu Theatre, Natyam and Protik Natya Gosthi will perform plays at 6:15 pm everyday.
