4 reasons inspire govt to try war criminals

Law Minister Shafique Ahmed yesterday said the government is holding the war crimes trial for four reasons.
The reasons are to remove the 39 years' damage of the nation after independence, fulfill the desires of victims' family members, stop the culture of immunity and establish the rule of law.
He told a presentation function on “International Criminal Court (ICC) Legal Tools Project and Case Matrix Network” organised by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) at the Liberation War Museum in the city in the morning.
The minister urged the international community to provide documents and evidences from their archives to Bangladesh for holding trial of war crimes and crime against humanity in 1971.
He also mentioned the evidences in government's hand are not sufficient for holding the trial smoothly.
State Minister for Law Qamrul Islam and Norwegian Ambassador Ragne Birte Lund, among others, spoke at the event. ICT Registrar Shahinur Islam, its prosecutors and investigators were also present.
