JS body okays bill for BDR reforms

A parliamentary body yesterday recommended that a new law be enacted to restructure the paramilitary border force under a new name, Border Guards Bangladesh.
Scrutinising the bill titled 'Border Guard Bangladesh Act 2010', the parliamentary standing committee on the home ministry placed a report in the House.
The government has moved to introduce the new law for the border force in the wake of the heinous slaying of army officers in the headquarters of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) at Pilkhana in February last year.
Home Minister Sahara Khatun placed the bill on September 20 proposing provisions on the formation of the border force, its control, administration and discipline with the provisions for harsh punishment including death penalty for jawans committing various offences.

recommended that the parliament pass a bill amending the Electoral Rolls Act to register Bangladeshi citizens living abroad as voters.

Also, the parliamentary standing committee on land ministry in a report recommended for the sanction of Sand Quarry and Soil Management bill.
