SI sent to jail in case for bribery, torture
Brahmanbaria Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court yesterday sent a sub inspector (SI) to jail after he appeared before the court in a case for bribery and torture.
SI Md Abdul Awal, in-charge of Aruail police outpost under Sarail Police Station in the district, along with a police team on October 26 night raided the house of Abul Kashem at Bhuishar village under Sarail upazila on suspicion about the presence of a fugitive in a robbery case, goes the prosecution.
Entering the house in the name of searching, SI Abdul Awal mercilessly beat Abul Kashem, Sirajul Isam, Abdul Basir, Ali Ahmad and Sara Begum there and arrested Ali Ahmad without any warrant, the prosecution adds.
SI Abdul Awal demanded Tk 10,000 as bribe from Kashem's family and threatened to implicate Ahmed in a robbery case in case of failure. On October 27, Abdul Basir of the victim family gave the demanded bribe to SI Abdul Awal and requested him to release Ahmed.
Although SI Abdul Awal allegedly took the bribe, he did not release Ahmed; rather implicated him in a case for clash and sent him to jail custody.
In this regard, Ali Ahmad's sister Jyotsna Begum on October 31 filed a case against SI Abdul Awal with Brahmanbaria Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court.
A judicial investigation was conducted and SI Abdul Awal appeared before the court yesterday, following a court order.
Judicial Magistrate Anamul Haque Basu Mia sent him to jail custody.
When contacted, Sarail Police Station OC Subhas Chandra Saha admitted the matter.
