Trial of 108 BDR mutineers starts in Sylhet today

Trial of 57 mutineers of 38 Rifles Battalion and 51 mutineers of 21 Rifles Battalion under Sylhet sector will begin at special court-14 at the sector headquarters today.
Headed by Comilla Sector Commander Col SM Farhad, the special court will start trial proceedings against 51 mutineers of 21 Rifles Battalion at 9:00am. Trial proceedings against 57 mutineers of 38 mutineers will begin at the same court at 12 noon, said Lt Col Khairul Quadir, cmmanding officer of 21 Battalion, at a press briefing at the battalion headquarters yesterday afternoon.
A representative of the attorney general, two special public prosecutors and two BDR officials will remain present in the court during trial proceedings of the mutineers. Lt Col Khairul Quadir will act as prosecutor.
On February 26, the BDR men revolted against their officers and took control of the Sylhet sector headquarters and the two battalions. They also torched three private vehicles of the BDR officials in front of the battalion headquarters. The mutineers also put up barricades on the road in front of the 21 Battalion headquarters anf fired at least 200 blank shots.
The then officer-in-charge of Sylhet Kotwali Police Station Syeduzzaman filed three separate cases with the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court on May 17 last year against 51 mutineers of 21 battalion, 57 mutineers of 38 battalion and 34 mutineers of the sector headquarters.
They were later arrested and produced before the Chief Judicial magistrate's Court that sent them to jail hajat.
