Speakers at a discussion here yesterday underscored the need for maintaining proper quality of necessities used by people with disabilities everyday including essential commodities, social infrastructure and utility services.
They also emphasised on determining the quality of the products and services so that people of all ages could get easy access to them.
Bangladesh Standards & Testing Institution (BSTI) organised the discussion titled "Standards make the world accessible for all" in observance of "World Standards Day, 2010" at Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Agrabad.
While presiding over the session, Md Kademul Islam, director of BSTI, said many men can not access many commodities on account of their physical disabilities.
Vice President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) SM Shafikul Hoque said at least 650 million people globally are affected by some kind of disability. A slight modification in a device may bring a huge change in the life of a person with disability.
Speakers said, “Standards also provide a platform for the dissemination of technological innovations in both developed and developing countries. They help markets grow faster and increase global trade.”
MA Salam, senior vice president of CCCI, was the chief guest with Habibur Rahaman Bhuiyan, senior scientific officer of BCSIR and Joynul Rashid addressing the discussion.
