Drug peddler gets life, 3 others held

A Chapainawabganj court yesterday sentenced a drug peddler to life imprisonment in a case filed under Narcotics Control Act while law enforcers arrested three others with illegal drugs in Mymensingh the same day.
In Chapainawabganj, District and Sessions Judge's Court awarded life imprisonment to Osman Gani, 27, son of Abdul Mannan of Raninagar village under Alatuli union of Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila, reports our correspondent.
Judge Anwar Hossain pronounced the verdict in presence of the accused. The judge acquitted another accused Alam Ali, 38, of the same village as charges brought against him could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, BDR team of Hakimpur border outpost arrested Osman in front of a house at Harishpur village in the upazila at around 7:10pm on December,26, 2007 and recovered 80 grams heroin from his possession
The BDR men handed him over to Sadar Police Station the following day and filed a case against Osman and his accomplice Alam under Narcotics Control Act.
After investigation, Sub-Inspector Liakot Ali pressed charges against the two on January 23,2008.
After examining the prosecution witnesses and other relevant documents, the court handed down the verdict.
In Mymensingh, Rab personnel in separate drives arrested three drug peddlers in the town and Dhubarua upazila early yesterday and on Monday.
According to our correspondent, A team of Rab-9 arrested drug trader Rokon, son of Rajab Ali of Dakshin Ranipur village in the upazila at around 1:00am and recovered 96 bottles of foreign wine from his possession.
Acting on a tio-off, Rab personnel raided Satariapara village in the upazila and arrested Rokon. Following his confessional statement, the Rab team later recovered the wine and a motorcycle from his house.
Rokon was later handed over to Dhubaura police.
On Monday, the elite force conducted a drive in Raghurampur rail gate area in the town and arrested Siraj Mia, 32, and Ishak Uddin, 60, along with illegal drugs.
The arrestees were later handed over to the police. A case filed against them under Narcotics Control Act.
