Paban gets bail

A Dhaka Court yesterday granted a 15-day bail to Khandaker Akhter Hamid Paban, son of BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain, in a cracker blast case.
Judge Mohammad Zohurul Hoque of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order considering Paban's illness after he along with his lawyers appeared before it and sought the bail.
Moving the bail petition, Paban's lawyers Masud Ahmed Talukder and Sanaullah Miah told the court that their client was brought to the court by an ambulance due to his sickness.
Paban earlier surrendered before the High Court (HC) seeking anticipatory bail. But the HC directed him to appear before the trial court within six weeks.
Metropolitan Public Prosecutors Abdullah Abu and Shah Alam Talukder opposed the petition.
They said three of his (Paban) accomplices had earlier given confessional statement implicating his involvement in the cracker blast incident in front of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's Gulshan office on February 23 this year. So, they prayed for sending him to jail without granting him the bail.
The same court on July 5 issued arrest warrants against Paban and Omar Faruk, former Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) president of Chatkhil upazila, in connection with the case as they have been absconding since the case was filed.
Four other accused -- Golam Sabbir alias Shovon, Syed Hasan Rony and Pradip Saha, secretary of Sonaimuri upazila JCD and Dakat Babu -- have been arrested on different dates.
Of them, Shovon, Rony and Pradip have given confessional statement saying that they had exploded home-made bombs in front of the BNP chairperson's office as per Paban's direction.
