Wife killed over dowry
A man allegedly beat his wife to death over dowry in Kamrangirchar area in the capital on Friday.
Kamrangirchar police recovered the body of the housewife, Laily Akhter Bristi, 18, yesterday morning and arrested her husband Delwar Hossain.
Neighbours told police that the couple were locked in a fierce fight on Friday night and at one stage, Delwar started beating his wife.
Sub-inspector Rafiqul Islam told The Daily Star the body bore several hitting marks.
In primary interrogation, Delwar admitted he beat his wife, but claimed she committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling.
Shafiqul Islam, father of the deceased, said Laily and Delwar eloped and married six months ago.
He said Delwar had been unemployed and constantly kept pressing her daughter for money. Delwar was arrested one and a half months back on charges of stealing a computer. It cost them Tk 10,000 to bail him out, Shafiqul added.
Laily's mother Hazera Begum alleged that Delwar killed her daughter as they refused to meet his demand for Tk 50,000 in dowry.
A case has been filed with Kamrangirchar Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
