Tiger kills fisherman
A fisherman was killed in an attack by a tiger at Porakatna in Chankuri river of Sundarbans in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Naba Kumar, 36, resident of Mathurapur village.
Sundarbans Forest Department sources said six fishermen, including Naba, were catching fishes in the river in the morning when a tiger suddenly attacked Naba and took him deep inside Sundarbans.
Later, other fishermen recovered his body, which bore injury marks from the deep forest.
Mihir Kumar Dey, deputy forest officer of East Department of Sundarbans, said that a total of 156 fishermen, bawali and others were killed in separate attacks by tigers in Sundarbans from 2001 to August 28 this year.
A total of 13 tigers, which came to localities of East and West Departments, were killed by villagers during the time, he said.
