'Death Threats' to PM

Delwar, 2 BNP leaders sued in Panchagarh

BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain and the party's two other leaders were sued in Panchagarh yesterday for ''open death threats'' to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Awami League leader Anisur Rahman, also the general secretary of Panchagarh District Bar Association, filed the case with the district's Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court accusing Delwar and the two other BNP leaders -- Rafiqul Islam Mia and Shah Moazzem Hossain.
Anisur in his complaint said the three leaders on July 25 threatened Sheikh Hasina with the same fate her father Bangabanhdu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman suffered.
Anisur said the speech was derogatory, arguing that the BNP leaders in fact threatened the country's sovereignty and democracy by delivering such words.
Magistrate Jafrol Hasan, however, had not passed any order in this connection so far. The order was likely to come today, said the court sources.
A case was filed on the same charges against the BNP leaders on Sunday with a Dhaka court that asked the three to appear before it on August 25.
