100 Jamaat-Shibir protesters arrested across districts

Law enforcers yesterday arrested around a hundred leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir in different areas outside the capital as Jamaat-Shibir men blocked traffic and engaged in unruly activities during their programmes protesting the arrest of three top Jamaat leaders on Tuesday.
Jamaat Ameer (chief) Motiur Rahman Nizami, Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed and Nayeb-e-Ameer Delwar Hossain Saydee were arrested on Tuesday, hours after a Dhaka court issued arrest warrant against them in connection with a case filed for hurting religious sentiment of Muslims.
Our Staff Correspondent reports from Khulna: Police arrested Khulna city Jamaat Ameer Mian Golam Parwar and 21 other Jamaat-Shibir men as they turned violent during their procession on Sir Iqbal Road and lower Jessore Road under Khulna Sadar Police Station.
The Jamaat-Shibir men, who brought out the procession in protest against arrest of three top central leaders of Jamaat, pelted the police with brickbats and damaged a number of roadside shops.
Seriously injured during the incident, OC Munirul Giash, SI Abdur Rahim and constable Shariful Islam were admitted to Khulna General Hospital.
Our Chapainawabganj correspondent reports: Police arrested 12 leaders and activists of Jamaat, including secretary general of its Chapainwabganj pourasava unit Abul Hasan, from different areas of the district on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
"Jamaat men blocked road on Chapainawabagnj-Sonamasjid Highway in Mohananda Bridge area, disrupting road communication late Tuesday night. Two cases were lodged in this connection under the Speedy Trial Act against the 12 Jamaat men," Ahsanul Haque, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said.
Police arrested Chandpur town unit Jamaat Ameer Shahjahan Miah and two other activists on Tuesday midnight when the Jamaat men, led by Shahjahan, brought out a procession in Truck Road area in the town protesting the arrest of their three top leaders, reports our correspondent.
The law enforcers also arrested Golam Mostafa, ameer of Matlab Dakshin upazila unit, following the same allegation on Tuesday night.
Our Brahmanbaria correspondent adds: Five Jamaat-Shibir activists were arrested in Kashba upazila of Brahmanbaria.
The activists brought out a procession from Araibari Madrasa at about 11:00am protesting arrest of Nizami, Mojaheed and Saydee, witnesses said.
As police tried to stop their move, they pelted the law enforcers with brickbats, leaving four police personnel injured. Police lobbed teargas shells and picked up five activists from the spot.
In Jessore, police arrested 12 Shibir men on charge of plotting destructive activities in the town, reports our correspondent.
Officer in charge of Kotwali police station Moazzem Hossain said they were arrested from Shibir controlled messes in Khorki, City College Para, Barandipara and Sheihkrati areas of the town.
Police arrested five Jamaat-Shibir leaders and activists including Satkhira district Sramik Kalyan Federation President Sheikh Eman Ali in Kalaroa upazila on charge of barricading Satkhira-Jessore road late Tuesday night, reports our correspondent.
Police arrested Kushtia district Jamaat Ameer Abdul Wahed, Nayeb-e-Ameer Farhad Hossain, Kumarkhali upazila unit Secretary Abdu Bari and Bheramara Pourosava unit Jamaat Ameer Harun-ur-Rahsid on Tuesday midnight, our Kushtia correspondent reports.
In Meherpur, police arrested Jamaat leader Enamul and Shibir cadres Angur Hossain, Sohag and Manik the same night, reports a correspondent.
Our Faridpur correspondent adds: Faridpur district unit of Jamaat's Nayeb-e-Amir Md Khales, Faridpur Municipality unit Secretary Sayed Israil and eight others got hurt as police charged batons on Jamaat-Shibir men when they tried to bring out a protest procession from Chawk Bazar Jame Mosjid gate of the town yesterday afternoon.
Police also detained 15 Jamaat-Shibir activists in Barisal, two in Moulvibazar and four in Gouripur and Trishal upazilas of Mymensingh district.
In Khagrachhari, tension mounted between BNP and Awami League (AL) activists as leaders of AL and its front organisations under the banner of Sacheton Nagorik Samaj yesterday set up a symbolic war criminal's effigy in front of a statue of late president Ziaur Rahman at Zia Squre in Khagrachhari Sadar upazila, reports our correspondent.
