Five get life in Bogra for killing BCL leader

A Bogra court yesterday sentenced five people to life term imprisonment for killing a leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), reports our staff correspondent.
The court also fined the convicts Tk 20,000 each, in default, to serve two years more in jail.
Judge Nitai Chandra Saha of Judge court-3 handed down the verdict against Sumon, 24, Jitu, 24, Adam, 24, Anarul, 26, and Gittu Masum for killing Robiul Islam, a BCL leader.
The court also acquitted nine other accused in the case.
According to the case statement, the convicts shot and hacked Robiul to death on September 28, 2006 in front of his house.
Victim's brother Abdul Motin later filed a murder case on September 30, 2006.
In Faridpur, a court yesterday awarded life sentence to five people and different jail terms to two others for killing a man in Sadar upazila in 2006, reports our correspondent.
The lifers are Anwar Zahid, 32, former district correspondent of daily Inqilab, Jahangir, 22, Shaheed, 25, Kalachan, 32, and Majed 24. The court also fined them Tk 50,000 each, in default they are suffer six months more in jail.
Two other convicts are Bazlu, 28, and Rabeya, 50. Bazlu was sentenced to seven years imprisonment while Rabeya to three years. The court fined Bazlu Tk 10,000 and Rabeya Tk 5,000, in default Bazlu is to suffer three more months and Rabeya one more month in jail.
Police submitted a charge sheet in the case on March 9, 2008 against Anwar Zahid Zahangir, Shaheed , Majed , Kalachan , Nazrul, Zihad, Bazlu, Rabeya. Of them, Nazrul, Zihad were acquitted as murder charge brought against them could not be proved.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Abul Kashem Mohammad Mostafa Kamal pronounced the verdict.
According to the prosecution, Kamal Hossain, 28, of Laxmipur village under Sadar upazila, went missing on December 25, 2006. After seven days, his decomposed body was found in double-bridge area of Keshobnagar. Being informed police went to the spot and recovered the body.
Victim's uncle Md Elias Hossain filed a murder case with Sadar Police Station on January 2, 2008, against Bazlu, his elder brother Kalachan, mother Rabeya Begum, Jahangir, Majed, Shaheed and four to five unnamed people.
Police later arrested six accused and on their confessional statements, they (police) arrested Anwar Zahid on January 17, 2008.
