6 killd in Road accidents
At least six people were killed and nine others injured in separate road accidents in Gazipur, Bogra, Meherpur and Brahmanbaria yesterday.
UNB from Gazipur says: Two workers of Standard Garments were killed and six others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a microbus on Dhaka-Tangail Highway at Chandra in Kaliakoir upazila yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Hasina, 24 and Lipi, 25, hailed from Kazipur in Sirajganj.
Police said, the accident occurred at about 8:00am when a truck collided head-on with a Sirajganj-bound microbus, carrying eight garment workers, leaving two of them dead on the spot and injuring others.
The injured were rushed to a local hospital.
Staff correspondent from Bogra reports: At least two people were killed in a road accident on Bogra-Shantahar highway near Paota level crossing area in the district.
The deceased were identified as Abdur Rob, 45, and his mother Achhia Begum, 65.
Police said the accident occurred when Rob along with his mother Achhia was travelling in a Naogaon-bound car from Dhaka. Driver of the car lost his control over the steering and fell into a ditch near an under-construction bridge in Paota level crossing area at around 12:00 midnight yesterday, killing them on the spot.
Our correspondent from Jhenidah reports: An Awami League leader was killed in a road accident in front of the Meherpur police super office yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Shamsujjah, 50, son of Mohammad Ali and general secretary of Meherpur pourasava ward No-7 Awami League.
Witnesses said the accident occurred a mango-laden truck hit Shamsujjah from behind while he was walking along the Wapda road at around 8:30am, leaving him dead on the spot.
Local alleged that a helper was driving the truck.
Officer-in-charge (OC) Jihad Hossain of Meherpur Sadar police station said the body has been sent to Meherpur Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Police seized the truck but its driver and helper managed to flee.
Our correspondent from Brahmanbaria adds: One passerby was killed and three others were injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Budhumti village under Bijoynagar Upazila in the district yesterday.
The dead was identified only as a fisherman, 45.
Witnesses and police said a speeding truck knocked two fishermen and two madrasa students from behind while they were standing on the highway and fell into wayside ditch.
One fisherman died on the spot and another unidentified fisherman aged about 25 and tow madrasa students Abed, 16, and Monir, 16, were injured seriously.
The injured were rushed to Brahmanbaria Modern Hospital in critical condition.
The driver and helper of the truck managed to escape.
The body was sent to Brahmanbaria Modern Hospital for autopsy.
