Historic 7th June today
Today is the historic 7th June--the Six-Point Demand Day.
The nation will pay homage to its brave sons who laid down their lives on this day 44 years ago for the realisation of the six-point demand through a vigorous movement led by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Eleven people, including Manu Mian, Shafique and Shamsul Haque were gunned down by police and East Pakistan Rifles (EPR) members on June 7, 1966 in Dhaka and Narayanganj during a hartal called for the release of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other leaders detained for launching the six-point movement against the then barbaric ruling clique.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman launched his historic six-point political and economic programme in Lahore in 1966, aiming to attain greater autonomy of the then East Pakistan.
President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday gave separate messages on the eve of the day.
President Zillur Rahman, in his message, said the historic six-point demand is a milestone in country's long struggle for independence.
The six-point contained reasons and inevitability of the independence of Bangladesh, he added.
The president paid rich tributes to the memories of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the greatest Bengali of all times and an exponent of the historic six-point demand.
"The six-point demand was for ensuring people's voting rights, introducing separate currency system, overseas trade and regional taxation system later transformed into public demand," he said.
After announcement of six-point demand, Zillur Rahman said the Pakistani rulers arrested Bangabandhu and tortured him inhumanly, despite that he did not retreat.
The premier, in her message, said it is an unforgettable day in the struggle for independence of the Bengalis.
She paid rich tribute to the memories of all martyrs, including the martyrs of historic 7th June.
