Bullets hit Hasina's Mercedes on Aug 21

Experts find

Ballistic experts found that three bullets hit the windows of the armoured Mercedes in which Awami League (AL) chief Sheikh Hasina was escaping the scene following the grenade attacks on the AL rally on August 21, 2004.
A three-member team, comprising members from the Special Branch of Police (SB) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID), already prepared a report in which it mentioned that 10 marks were found on five windows of the Mercedes G-class sports utility vehicle (SUV). Of those, three marks were of bullets, sources said.
The team is expected to submit its 19-page report to the authorities concerned in a day or two.
The findings have given a new dimension to the investigation of the gruesome attack, as six Harkatul Jihad Al Islami (Huji) men, including its operations commander Mufti Abdul Hannan, in their confessional statements admitted only using grenades in the attacks.
Now, the CID, which is investigating the case, is trying to ascertain who fired the shots on the SUV apparently to kill Hasina.
AL leaders including its chief Hasina had been claiming that shots were fired on the bulletproof vehicle to kill her when she was trying to escape the scene in it.
The then BNP-led alliance government had turned down the AL claim and said that experts did not find any evidence on the vehicle.
Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association in its enquiry report on the incident mentioned that criminals fired gunshots at the SUV and hurled grenades, which hit its windscreen and windows on the left, as it was leaving the spot.
But, as the glass was bulletproof, the leader was saved. Almost all the witnesses emphatically stated that the grenade attack on the meeting and shots taken on her vehicle were aimed to kill the AL chief and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in a planned way, the report added.
The CID seized the vehicle of now detained Hasina on November 10 as evidence of the August 21 grenade attack case.
Two days later, the three-member expert team was formed with Assistant Superintendent of Police of SB Asadul Haque, CID Inspectors Moslem Ali and Sabdar Ali.
