Shahidnagar Massacre Day
Several thousand people and freedom fighters paid homage to the martyrs at Shahidnagar memorial, recalling the tragic Shahidnagar massacre day (also known as Dab Bagan genocide) on April 19. The speakers demanded the punishment of the war criminals and vowed to uphold the spirit of the Liberation War. The freedom fighters also observed daylong programmes at Shahidnagar village, Santhia upazila, Pabna district.
On the fateful day of the massacre on April 19, 1971, the Pakistani army with the help of their local collaborators killed over 200 people, including 17 freedom fighters at the coconut grove of the village.
Recalling the tragic day, the freedom fighters placed wreaths and hoisted the national flag at Shahidnagar memorial of Shahidnagar village.
The Pabna district administration organised a discussion at Shahidnagar High School premises. Additional District Magistrate, Pabna Jafar Ullah chaired the meeting while the secretary of Dhaka City unit AL Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhuri Maya spoke as the chief guest.
Among the other speakers were former lawmaker advocate Amzad Hossain, Dhaka city unit AL leader Mukul Chowdhury, former VP of Rajshahi University Nurul Islam Thandu and freedom fighter Akbar Ali who led the Shahidnagar battle that day.
