Reopened Polish airports shut again
Three airports in Poland that had been reopened yesterday morning, including in the capital Warsaw, were closed again hours later, as a cloud of volcanic ash wreaked travel havoc across Europe.
"The three closed airports are Warsaw, Lodz and Krakow," Polish aviation agency spokesman Grzegorz Hlebowicz told AFP.
"The fourth, Rzeszow, could be shut again soon," he added.
Rzeszow is in southeast Poland, Krakow in the south, and Lodz, in the centre of the country.
The four had reopened at 11:00 am (0900 GMT) Monday.
Poland began shutting its skies in stages from late Thursday, a day after an Icelandic volcano erupted, sending an ash cloud across Europe which has caused turmoil in air travel.
Also Monday, Poland's flag carrier LOT said it was extending the cancellation of all its flights until 2:00 pm (1200 GMT) Tuesday.
Transit flights at altitudes above 6,100 metres (20,000 feet) remained authorised in Polish airspace Monday.
The travel chaos across Europe prevented many world leaders from attending the funeral of Polish president Lech Kaczynski on Sunday, following his death in an air crash in Russia on April 10.
