Afghan probe will be fair: Karzai
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has promised a "transparent and fair" probe into claims that three Italian medical workers were part of a plot to kill a provincial governor, his office said yesterday.
The Afghan leader made the assurance at a meeting with Italy's special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Attilio Iannucci, in Kabul.
Saturday's meeting followed the arrest of nine people -- three Italians and six Afghans -- after suicide vests, home-made bombs, guns and ammunition were found at a hospital in the volatile southern city of Lashkar Gah a week ago.
The alleged target, Gulab Mangal, governor of Helmand province, has also accused the Italian men of involvement in the death of an Afghan translator who was beheaded by Taliban after being kidnapped with an Italian journalist in 2007.
