Volcanic ash and cricket!
The volcanic ash cloud which has closed the Unite Kingdom and much of European airspace is also having an impact on the cricket world. Afghanistan's journey to the Caribbean for the World Twenty20 is likely to be disrupted as they were due to transit London to join Canada, Zimbabwe and Ireland who are already in West Indies.
Robert Bryan, the tournament director, said he still expected the team to arrive in the next few days despite the disruption. "We expect that Afghanistan will arrive here, notwithstanding the volcano dust in Europe, over this weekend. Their participation is historic and it is probably going to be the team people will want to watch to see how they do in the region."
Most teams are not due to arrive in the Caribbean until next weekend following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League in India so they are unlikely to be effected by the travel chaos. However, International Cricket Council (ICC) staff who are set to travel to West Indies on Saturday to finalise preparations for the event have had to alter their routes to the Caribbean in order to avoid Europe.
