Bela Nobi passes away
Bela Nobi, noted women rights activist and one of the presidium members of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, passed away at a city hospital on Saturday at the age of 74, says a press release.
She had been suffering from cancer for long.
Bela left behind her husband, two sons, two daughters and a host of relatives to mourn her death.
Her body has been kept at her daughter's residence (House 37, Road 3, Dhanmondi) in the city.
Different organisations have expressed deep shock at the death of Bela.
Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) President Manjurul Ahsan Khan and General Secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim in a statement said Bela, the first women commissioner in the country, had an immense contribution to the country's women movement.
Bangladesh Mahila Parishad in a statement said Bela had been a dedicated activist since its birth.
The platform also recalled her contribution to various progressive social movements.
Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), Democratic Lawyers Association of Bangladesh, Karmojibi Nari and Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association in separate statements also condoled her death.
They conveyed sympathy to the bereaved family and prayed for the salvation of the departed soul.
