Fire in Ctg sugar mills

Equipment and raw sugar worth Tk 1.20 crore were damaged in a fire at S Alam Refining Sugar Mill in the port city of Chittagong yesterday.
The fire broke out at Conveyor Warehouse of S Alam Refining Sugar Industries Limited at Isanagar under Karnaphuli Police Station around 11:30am.
The fire, which gutted some raw sugar at the warehouse, spread fast to the adjoining factory and damaged equipment like conveyor belt.
Five firefighting units from the city's Lamar Bazar, Kalurghat, Chandanpura, Agrabad and Patiya Fire Station rushed to the spot and managed to douse the flames around 1:30pm.
Firemen suspected that the fire might have originated from an electric short circuit and the loss was estimated at Tk 1.20 crore.
Deputy Director of Fire Service Ruhul Amin said the fire units took some time to reach the spot for long distance and narrow access road.
The refining mill, first of its kind in Chittagong, set up on around 90 acres of land at Isanagar went into production in September last year.
