Safetypin opens its doors
Darkak (a noted little magazine) opened an art gallery called 'Safetypin' on Central Road, Dhanmondi in the city. Poet-painter Sanjib Purohit is the founder of the gallery.
Purohit says, “In recent years Bangladeshi artists have carved a niche in the international art circuit. They now receive international exposure and participate at various art fairs, exhibitions and competitions.
“In the past, art galleries in Dhaka were very few and the sale of paintings was nothing to write home about. Lately that atmosphere has changed. A number of new galleries have opened up in different parts of the city and the sales of the paintings have gradually increased. For us, this new gallery is a part of our social commitment. Making money is not the major concern here.”
In 1990 Purohit organised a cultural team named 'Bhalobashar Jouthokhamar.' The little magazine Darkak was published by the team. Since its inception, Darkak has played a significant role in several sectors -- literature, art and varied socio-cultural activities.
At present, 'Safetypin' is holding a group art exhibition. The participating painters are Shahid Kabir, Nisar Hossain, Naima Haque, Nasim Ahmed Nadvi, Shishir Bhattacharjee, Mahmudur Rahman Dipon, Dewan Mijan, Najib Tareque, Shahjahan Ahmed Bikash, Tarafder Meraj, Uttam Ghosh, Salam Abdus, Safin Omar, Sheikh Mehedi Kamal and Sanjib Purohit.
Themes of the works at the exhibition are varied and most of the painters carry their personal hallmark. Mediums are oil, acrylic, mixed media, digital print and more.
The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of the late painter Rowjatul Jannat Champa.
The exhibition ends on March 15.
