4 die as train hits tempo

Four people, including a four-year old boy, were killed and another received critical injuries as a speeding train hit a passenger tempo in Basail upazila of Tangail yesterday
Police and witnesses said the accident occurred at about 11:00am when the driver of the tempo was trying to cross Dapnajar level crossing ignoring the request of tempo passengers and others just before the arrival of a Dhaka-bound train.
The speeding train of Silk City Paribahan from Rajshahi rammed the Karatia-bound tempo, killing three people, including the tempo driver, on the spot and injuring two others. The four-year old boy succumbed to his injuries at Tangail General Hospital.
The train, however, did not stop and continued its journey to Dhaka.
The dead were identified as tempo driver Raju Miah, 30, son of Gafur Miah of Paikpara village in Delduar upazila, Ratna Begum, 25, wife of Azad Miah of Gazariapara village in Sadar upazila, and their four-year old son Aditya, and Bakul Begum, 40, wife of Nurul Islam of Gosaibari Kumulli village in Sadar upazila. All of them were the passengers of the tempo.
Condition of Swapna, 12-year-old daughter of Bakul Begum, was stated to be critical. She is fighting for her life at the Tangail Hospital.
Immediately after the accident, local people rescued two injured children and sent them to the hospital in a critical condition, said Abdul Gafur, in-charge of the number 6 gate of the rail track, adding that the level crossing has no gate or gateman.
Fazlu Miah, a witness, told The Daily Star that the tempo driver despite seeing the speeding train tried to cross rail track paying no attention to the request of tempo passengers and nearby people.
