Biman 2nd
It couldn't have been any better for Biman as their consistent performance earned them a second-place finish after an entertaining last day of the Ispahani Tea Premier Division Cricket League yesterday.
Biman defeated Cricket Coaching School by six wickets at Fatullah to make sure they were in with a shout, and the result of the big match at Sher-e-Bangla went in their favour which meant Biman edged Abahani out on head-to-head record for the second spot.
It was a team-effort from Biman that saw them chase down a challenging total of 221 set by CCS with ample overs and wickets left. Two half-centuries and two more near-ones turned it into an easy chase for Sanwar Hossain's boys.
National team's wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim and promising batsman Avishek Mitra laid the foundation putting on 85 runs for the first wicket in 15 overs. Mushfiqur played an aggressive knock as he collected 55 off just 47 deliveries while his partner got 31.
After the two departed, two more cheap dismissals followed to reduce Biman to 125 for 4 in 26 overs. But the next two batsmen, Elias Sunny and Sri Lankan recruit Hashanta Fernando batted with aplomb to see their side home with four overs left unused. Hashanta remained not out on 54 while Sunny was unbeaten on 49.
Earlier, despite a 174-run partnership in the middle-order CCS could muster only 221 runs losing all their wickets in 49.3 overs. Taposh Ghosh (85) and Nazmul Hossain (89) played two marvellous knocks, but found very little support from the others, except from skipper Uttam Sarker (21) who was the only other batsman to get to double digits. Sharifullah was the most successful bowler with 3 wickets for 27.
In the other match of the day, Kalabagan defeated Victoria by six wickets at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium to finish fourth on the points table. Victoria finished above Cricket Coaching School amongst the Super League teams.
Batting first Victoria put on 259 losing all wickets in their 50 overs, thanks to a 101-run knock from all-rounder Abul Bashar. But Kalabagan were not flustered by that as they had their own man in Mohammad Zahid who scored 107 runs to overhaul the target with 5.5 overs remaining and six wickets in hand.
