Four housewives killed, 3 of them 'for dowry'

Four women were killed allegedly by their husbands, three of them for dowry, in three districts in the last five days.
In Homna upazila of Comilla, a man along with his family members killed his wife for dowry at village Pirojpur on Thursday night.
Victim Popy Akhter,23, was daughter of Nurul Islam of village Mirshikari of the upazila, reports a correspondent.
Quoting locals police said, Popy was married to Nur Mahammod two years ago. She was often tortured by her husband and in-laws as her parents failed to pay the promised dowry.
Neighbours said, on the fateful night Popy`s husband and in-laws put pressure on her to bring more money from her parents. As she refused to do so, they became furious and beat her up mercilessly causing her death on the spot.
Our Correspondent in Netrakona adds: a woman was killed allegedly by husband at Bairaura village around midnight on Wednesday.
Victim Anjana Adhikari,22, was wife of Sujit Debnath of the village under Sadar upazila.
Police quoting locals said, Anjana, daughter of one Santosh Chandra Baisnab of village Dhariapur under Gouripur upazila in Mymensingh district was married to Sujit Debnath two years ago.
Police said, Sujit used to beat up Anjana for dowry. On Wednesday night they locked in an altercation over dowry. At one stage, Sujit strangled Anjana with the help of his mother Maya Rani and elder brother Ranjit Mallik.
On information, police recovered the body on Thursday morning and sent it to Netrakona Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
A case was filed with Netrakona police station and police arrested Sujit and his mother Maya.
The day before, in a similar incident, a pregnant housewife was strangled for dowry at Nawapara village under Khaliajuri upzaila of the district.
Police later recovered the body from the jungle near the victim's house.
Police said, Asma Begum, 20, was daughter of one Rahamat Ali of the same village. She was married to Nazrul Islam two years ago and was pregnant at the time of murder.
Mother of victim Sahara Begum,45, claimed that they gave 50 thousand taka and valuables as dowry during the marriage. But Nazrul used to press Asma and her parents for more 50 thousand taka.
Sahara said, three days before the incident, Nazrul threatened them that he will kill Asma in case of failure to pay the amount.
A case was filed with Khaliajuri police station but Nazrul went into absconding.
Contacted, officer-in-charge (OC) of Khaliajuri police station Kazi Abdul Kaiyum said, Nazrul might have killed Asma for the money and hid her body in the jungle.
In Bogra, police on Tuesday arrested a man on charge of killing his wife at Mamushahi village in Sherpur upazila, reports UNB.
Locals said, rickshaw-puller Hasmat Ali alias Bullet, 20, married Bilkis Akter, 18, of south Pechul village six months ago.
After the marriage, poverty-stricken Hasmat wanted to go to Dhaka along with his wife in quest of a better living. As Bilkis refused to accept his proposal, he started torturing her time and again.
On the fateful night, he picked up a quarrel with her over the issue and at one stage strangled her at about 1:30am.
On information, police rushed in and caught the killer from the spot.
