Bangladesh got their campaign of the AFC U-19 Championship qualifiers off on the wrong foot when they suffered a massive 5-0 defeat to South Korea in one of three Group E openers at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand yesterday.
Bangladesh went 2-0 down in the first half against their mighty opponents with Lee Jae Gwan and Lee Hakmin striking in the sixth and 35th minutes respectively, according to a Bangladesh Football Federation press release.
After resumption, Kim Won Sik converted a penalty shot to make it 3-0 in the 58th minute before Suk Hyunjun netted the fourth goal a few minutes later.
Hakmin struck his second and his team's fifth goal in the dying minutes to post an easy win for the top favourites of the group.
The margin could have been much worse for Bangladesh had goalkeeper Sohel Alam not made a string of saves in the match.
Bangladesh, who are dreaming of qualifying for the finals as runners-up, will take on Vietnam on Tuesday.
Macao, Thailand and Laos are others opponents in Group E.
