Excessive commercialisation has diminished the quality of films, particularly in comparison with those of the '60s and '70s, though facilities and production have been augmented. However, the saving grace is that the latter phenomenon has spawned some quality films. This observation was made by noted film director Soovas Dutt, in the course of a recent interview with this correspondent at the Ramkrishna Sheba Ashram in Pabna. Earlier Dutta had been accorded a reception at the venue. The secretary of the Ashram Binoy Jyoti Kundu chaired the reception.
In Dutt's words, “It is frustrating when we compare the films of our times with those being made currently. The sweeping changes are evident on all fronts, such as attire and sets.” However, he went on to assert, “All is not lost. As a result of this situation, we are getting some quality films and these are gaining popularity. We have to encourage talented filmmakers so that that more such cinematic works are produced.”
Dutt embarked on his film career in 1957. He pointed out that he was greatly inspired by Satyajit Ray's “Pather Panchali”. In 1958 he acted in the Bangla film “A Desh Tomar Amar” directed by Ehtesham.
In the course of his long film career, Dutta has directed 26 films and 18 TV serials. Of his famous movies, “Shutorang” and “Arunodoyer Agnishakkhi” were box office successes. He has also performed in 40 films and dramas. Dutt has won several awards including the Ekushey Padak for his immense contribution to Bangla cinema.
The veteran filmmaker believes that younger artistes and directors should cultivate the qualities of “Honesty, cordiality and sincerity” -- essential ingredients for a successful career.
Dutt added, “The people of Pabna are fortunate that this is the hometown of Suchitra Sen, the legendary film actress. Her ancestral residence should be restored and a memorial, library or archive should be established at this location.”
