SC stays HC bail to Mamun
The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday stayed till October 18 the High Court orders that granted bail to controversial businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun in four extortion cases.
Chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice Muzammel Hossain passed the stay orders upon four separate government petitions moved by Additional Attorney General AKM Zahirul Hoque.
The judge also asked the government to file separate leave-to-appeal petitions with the SC against the HC verdicts by October 18.
Mamun was arrested on January 30 in 2007 on different charges, and he was shown arrested in 19 cases.
On October 8, the HC in separate verdicts granted bail to Mamun in four extortion cases filed by four businessmen under emergency power rules (EPR) 2007 against him with different police stations in Dhaka during the past caretaker government.
Barrister Rafique-Ul Huq appeared for Mamun.
