12 civilians killed in Afghan unrest

Twelve civilians were killed in Afghan violence, including six in a bomb attack in the north of the country, the interior ministry said in a statement yesterday.
"A homemade bomb attached by the enemies of Afghanistan to a motorbike exploded on Sunday as a minibus was passing, killing six civilians and wounding seven," it said, using the ministry's preferred term for Taliban insurgents.
The attack happened in Faryab, a northern province considered relatively peaceful.
Six civilians driving supplies to NATO bases were also killed and one kidnapped on the same day.
"The country's enemies on Sunday burned four trucks in Marawara district, in Kunar province (near the Pakistani border). Six drivers were killed and one was kidnapped," the ministry said.
Taliban fighters have over the last two years stepped up their attacks on US-led international forces who toppled their regime in 2001, despite the presence of around 100,000 foreign troops in the country.
