Night guard killed in Bogra on theft charges

A night guard of a cold store was killed at Sabgram, on the outskirts of Bogra town, yesterday morning allegedly for involvement in stealing.
Identified as Jannatul Ferdous Rony, the victim was a night guard at Northern Cold Store of Abul Kalam Azad, vice-president of the ruling Awami League (AL) district unit.
Jahidul Islam, manager of the store, filed a case with Bogra Sadar Police Station On August 2, claiming that the guard had stolen Tk 26,600 from the store.
Police said the employees and workers of the store caught Rony from his residence in Hili land port area around 6:00am and took him to the spot by force. They confined him in a room.
After few hours, police rescued his body.
Terming it unnatural death, Rafiqul Islam, sub-inspector of the police station, said the victim's neck bore several injury marks.
Jahidul said, “We confined him in the room. We did not torture him. Perhaps he committed suicide.”
Meanwhile, the victim's family claimed that Rony was severely tortured in the room. The influential quarter is trying to downplay the incident.
