Banks may remain open tomorrow

Huge transactions ahead of Eid

Commercial banks may keep their branches open tomorrow (Saturday) to facilitate the emergency transactions of clients ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
"The banks can keep open all or certain branches in their own consideration ensuring proper security measures to facilitate pre-Eid transactions," according to a Bangladesh Bank circular issued yesterday to the chief executive officers of commercial banks.
Meanwhile, the commercial banks witnessed a huge client pressure yesterday, the last day of transactions officially, before going on a long five-day vacation.
A few banks were planning to keep a very few branches open tomorrow.
The bank branches in the country's commercial hub of Motijheel were seen serving their clients even beyond the transaction hours yesterday.
Bank executives said there were huge pressure of withdrawals as well as the payment of utility bills, as people might have tried to go on vacation clearing their outstanding bills.
They said inter-bank money market was also very active, as the banks had to cope with the withdrawal pressure.
The inter-bank transactions ranged between Tk 3,500 crore and Tk 4,000 crore during the day.
"Unlike previous occasions, the call money rate remained within 8-10 percent in the highly liquidated market," a fund manager told UNB.
