Ex-UP chairman, accomplice to die, 3 others get life
A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced two people, including a Union Parishad (UP) chairman, to death and three others to life in jail for killing a UP member of Keraniganj in February 2006.
The convicts with death are former UP chairman of Ruhitpur Union Kamal Uddin, and one of his accomplices Mohammad Alamin while Zia, Shawkat and Piar Rahman were given life term imprisonment.
Judge Masdar Hossain of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 handed down the sentence in presence of the convicts at packed courtroom.
The court acquitted four others as the charges brought against them were not proved.
According to the prosecution, a group of miscreants led by Kamal killed former UP member Anwar Hossain of the same union at about 7:30am on February 1 in 2006 in the BSIC Industrial area at Ruhitpur in Keraniganj following a feud with the chairman.
Later, victim's wife Rofiza Begum filed a murder case against Kamal and 13 others the next day.
