New leadership to make it stronger
The new leadership of BNP's Dhaka city unit will be able to make the crucial chapter of the party stronger and wage tougher movement to force the government to hold an election under a non-party administration, the party spokesperson said yesterday.
“There is a grave political crisis in the country at present. BNP is trying to organise the party and overhaul its units and front bodies. And you all have noticed that the new committee of Dhaka city unit of BNP was announced on Friday,” Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told an extended meeting of the Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Kalyan Front at a city hotel.
In the much-awaited convening body comprising 56 members, BNP standing committee member and former Dhaka city mayor Mirza Abbas was made convener, replacing his arch rival and BNP vice-chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka, who is now in the USA for treatment, and Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel was made member secretary.
Speaking about the new committee, Fakhrul, the acting secretary general of BNP, said, “Mirza Abbas is a tested politician, while Sohel is a devoted leader. The Dhaka city unit of BNP will undoubtedly turn into a strong organisation under their leadership.”
In his speech, he also accused the government of destroying the country's democracy, and without giving any detail, Fakhrul said minority communities were attacked and repressed most under the Awami League government.
“It's the nature of the Awami League to gain political mileage only uttering democracy and secularism. They don't practice those,” he said.
