Memorial built in Himalayas
Mountaineers not only have built a positive image of the country but also are working as an inspiration for the younger generations to take positive challenges in their lives, speakers said at a programme on the recent expedition of a team to Mount Kyazo Ri in the Himalayas.
The climbers of Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club (BMTC) went on a expedition to Mount Kyazo Ri and returned after building a memorial of late mountaineer Sajal Khaled at Dughla pass in the Himalayas in Nepal.
The speakers said the country was proud of all the mountaineers who scaled Mount Everest and took the country's image to a new height.
Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman, Coordinator of Nijera Kari Khushi Kabir, Marketing Manager of Square Toiletries Jesmin Zaman, and Managing Director of DataSoft Systems Bangladesh Ltd Mahboob Zaman attended the programme, at Jatiya Press Club in the capital.
Enam Ul Haque, expeditor to Antarctica and North Pole, moderated the programme.
“Nothing is comparable to the feeling when we built the memorial at Dughla pass to pay our tributes to Sajal Khaled,” said Nishat Majumder, first Bangladeshi woman to conquer Everest.
The six-member expedition team led by MA Muhit, who ascended Everest twice, went to Nepal on October 10 to climb Kyazo Ri peak, located at 20,290 feet on the south west of Everest. But they were forced to abandon the expedition after climbing 20,000 feet on October 19 due to unfavourable weather, the mountaineers said at the programme.
On the way back, they built the memorial next to the memorials of famous mountaineers on October 24 at Dughla pass, lying on the way to an Everest base camp at 15,700 feet.
Sajal Khaled died on May 20, 2013 while descending from the Everest summit.
At the beginning, the participants observed one minute's silence in honour of late professor Zillur Rahman Siddiqui.
