MAKE YOUR OWN ROCKET!

MAKE YOUR OWN ROCKET!

We all like rockets; rockets are cool. We have all heard the metaphor “it's not rocket science” when someone is referring to some task or the other. This would suggest that rocket making is an extremely difficult process. Well, rockets aren't always difficult to make -- you can make a mini rocket using only a film canister, an antacid tablet and water.
Take a film canister, 35 mm ones work perfectly. Next take an antacid tablet and break it in half. You are now about to start making your rocket so please put on safety goggles and step outside the house. You need to be outdoors in a relatively empty space for this. Open the lid of the canister and pour in 5 ml or a teaspoon of water. Then as quick as you can drop the tablet half into the canister and seal it, making sure that the cap snaps on tightly. Then put the canister on the ground, cap side down, and step back leaving around 2 m distance between the canister and yourself; you should do this quickly too.
Then to give it a real rocket launching feel, start a countdown from 10. Then with a loud popping sound your rocket should launch and shoot up into the air.
If your rocket fails to launch within 10 seconds it's probably because the cap was not tight enough so the build-up of gas leaked out. You can always try again but please wait 30 seconds before you pick the first canister up or go near it, for the sake of your safety. To give it another go, repeat the procedure mentioned above. This time make sure that the cap is tighter.

If you like the idea of experimenting with rockets you can try the same process a few times but making some changes each time. Try using a smaller or larger piece of the tablet. Does it affect the time taken for your rocket to launch? Changing the amount of water you put in the canister could also have different results. Give it a try and find out!
