Summer feast Heirlooms of Tomorrow

Tenzing Chakma proved his flair as a designer again at the Bangladeshi Fashion Show in Mexico. Designing indo- western outfits with purely deshi fabrics, he established the fact that Bangladeshi designing and fabrics are as good as any other.

The primarily summer collection highlighting Jamdani, Rajshahi silk, Benarasi katan and indigenous fabrics displayed to the world the true meaning of being 'in-vogue'.

“I love working with local fabrics! Everything about it amuses me and hence I want the rest of the world to appreciate it as I do,” admits the talented designer.

“Personally, my belief is that it is about time the world got to see the finesse in our fabric and designs. After all we do have a well-built heritage in both fashion and styling. With Sozpodor, I believe I can continue experimenting, making the age-old tradition stay lucrative to the current world,” says Tenzing.

When inquired about his inspiration behind the predominant style in his latest collection, he agrees that summer was on his mind!

He goes on to reveal that the specific season is synonymous to fun, colours, frolic and fashion. Hence Sozpodor's latest line was all that and more.

If there is one thing that we can learn from Tenzing Chakma, it is to look chic in traditional attire.

How can that be done?

Very easy!  Put on that Jamdani sari of your mom's; the one that you have been meaning to all this time but couldn't because of your fear of being cast obsolete by your friends! Pair it with a sleeveless blouse or an off-shoulder and watch the jaws drop as you walk past the same people.

If you were meaning to wear a Rajshahi silk or a Benarasi katan, why not combine it with a floral printed flared blouse, a jacket or a caftan?

Too tired of wearing the sari in the same way all the time? Try out the different draping techniques! If the nivi drapes are not for you then maybe the dhoti style or the belted style is. The idea is to try out all the styling ideas and see which one suits best. After all who ever said being fashionable was an easy task?

If you are still bored with the suggestions made, then maybe it is time to re-ignite the designer within you by chopping off the silk drapery, turning it into a lehenga, kurti, a cute top or a combination of all three!  Amazed with the end results? Told you so….

Whoever said we couldn't look anything but boring in a traditional sari surely didn't know the basics of styling. This summer, make sure to prove these people wrong by taking out that age-old heirloom that you have saved up inside the wardrobe for years and flaunt it to the world in style.
