Monocrome Elegance
"Black symbolises serious, sombre, the darker side of the human nature, while white represents beginning, purity and angelic. I identify with the colours as being a part of who I am as a person," says Humaira Khan.
The latest collection targets the woman of substance, who loves to be elegant and stylish but still practices restraint and modesty.
"The approach is to keep it minimalistic but sophisticated," says Khan.
The aptly named 'Black and White' collection has a predominantly formal monochromatic look translated onto local fabrics, handlooms and embroidery in combination with Khan's specialty in playing with different kinds of cuts and styles, fusing modern with the traditional.
Her line embodies the traditional off-white fully embroidered kameez to a black half-silk three piece, which is a must-have like the West's little black dress. The saris themselves can turn any plain Jane into the next stunner. Different kinds of local embroidery are used like kari embellished on raw silk, muslin and a combination of both fabrics, making them runway ready for the next high-end event to attend .
What sets this latest collection aside from her previous ones is the union between continuation and the current. "Maintaining an overall harmony between my past and present lines, what makes each line individualistic are the in-fashion trends and styles used in relation to the time it was made in," she concludes.
The beauty of creation, using monochromatic primary colours in pieces is simply how classic they become in years' time.
While different patterns and colours will temporarily dominate the fashion scene, it is hard to mess up black and white.
