A court in Narayanganj today deferred the petition to take Hefajat-e-Islam's Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque on remand in two cases filed over rape and violence in the district's Sonargaon.

Narayanganj's Senior Judicial Magistrate Ahmed Humayun Kabir set May 12 for hearing the petition, our local correspondent reports.

Police on May 2 sought a 14-day remand for Mamunul in the two cases filed with Sonargaon Police Station.

Confirming this, Narayanganj Court Police Inspector Asaduzzaman said, "On the day of May 12, Hefajat leader Mamunul will be produced before the court virtually. But if the virtual court does not sit on that day, he will be then produced before the court in person."

Among the two cases, one was filed by a woman whom Mamunul claimed to be his second wife, on April 24.
