'Attack on Navy officer': Erfan Salim gets HC bail, no bar on release
The High Court today granted bail to Erfan Salim, son of Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Md Salim, in a case filed in connection with attacking Lt Wasif Ahmed Khan of Bangladesh Navy in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area last year.
The HC bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and Justice Md Badruzzaman delivered the verdict after hearing a petition filed by Erfan Salim seeking bail in the case.
There is no legal bar for Erfan Salim to walk out of jail following the HC verdict, his lawyer Sayed Ahmed Raza told The Daily Star.
The lawyer said his client has been made accused in five cases. He secured bail in three of those five cases and police gave final reports exempting him from charges in two other cases, he said.
Erfan Salim will be released from a jail of Kashimpur after the copy of the HC verdict reaches jail authorities, lawyer Sayed Ahmed Raza added.
Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ullah, who represented the state during hearing of the bail petition, told The Daily Star that the state will move an appeal before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging the HC verdict.
Earlier on January 27 this year, the HC bench issued a rule asking the state to explain why Erfan Salim should not be granted bail in the case.
Lt Wasif filed the case with Dhanmondi Police Station on October 25 last year, naming four accused including Erfan Salim (37) and three others -- AB Siddique Dipu (45), Md Zahid (35) and Md Mizanur Rahman (30) for attacking him on October 25.
A team of Rapid Action Battalion conducted a drive at Erfan's house in Old Dhaka and arrested him the same day.
