8 get life term for 2008 murder
A Dhaka court today sentenced eight to life in prison, in a case filed for killing a man in 2008.
Judge of Dhaka Special Judges Court-5 Iqbal Hossain handed down the verdict against convicts -- Alal Uddin, Joynal Abedin, A Razzak, A Sattar, A Zabbar, Aual Mia alias Aual, Samar Ali alias Samar and Tamij Uddin alias Tamu.
The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each, in default of which they will have to serve additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.
The court also sentenced convicts -- Sohel Rana, Sohrab Mia, Babul Mia alias Babul, and Firoz Mia -- to one and a half years in prison under two separate sections of the relevant law.
Accused Barek, Mostafa, and Omar Ali were acquitted as allegations brought against them could not be proven.
According to the case statement, on June 25, 2008, the convicts -- equipped with an iron rod, sharp weapons, hockey stick, and an axe -- broke into Alek Mia's house at Nalbhog village under Turag Police Station. The convicts hit Alek Mia indiscriminately, over a land-related dispute, which left him injured and caused his death.
Later, Ramjan Ali, the victim's younger brother, filed the case with Turag Police Station.
Police pressed charges against the convicts on November 25, 2008.
